UPDATE ON HAITI!
07/04/2011

January 12, 2010 – the day a catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti and left Port-au-Prince in ruins with 230,000 dead and a deadly cholera outbreak.

It has been just over a year, yet Haiti’s path towards progression seems to be slow and stilted with 95% of rubble still not removed. With rubble being the biggest impediment to rebuilding, it seems that Haiti is at a standstill and not much can be done. According to an article published by Time magazine, two-thirds of the 1.5 million Haitians left homeless still live in tents - less than half of the 45,000 shelters that were supposed to be built by the UN and other organisations have been erected.

But what has been done? An $8 million dollar grant has been used to connect Ravine Pintade to running water, set up a health clinic and install a day-care centre and latrines. The grant has come from the US Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, various American NGOs, Cooperative Housing Foundation International and Project Concern International. Washington has spent $100 million on hauling debris with some of this money coming from the $1,15 billion the U.S. pledged to Haitian recovery last March.

Steering away from infrastructure, Haiti is also suffering from a Cholera epidemic which sprouted shortly after the earthquake. BBC news has suggested that, rather than the predicted 400,000, it is believed that the number of Hatians affected could reach double the amount. The World Health Organisation says that everything possible is being done to try and contain the disease. The bacterial disease is spread from person-to-person through contaminated food and water.

To help contain the cholera epidemic, and to give out a helping hand, do your bid and donate!
